About the Festival

Throughout the course of 2022, the European Foundation for Support of Culture (EUFSC) is organising a festival celebrating the life and works of distinguished Latvian composer and musicologist Georgs Pelēcis, in honour of the 75th anniversary of his birth.

Taking the form of a number of concerts which are being primarily held in the Latvian capital of Riga across the year, this festival is part of the EUFSC’s drive to promote and support the talented contemporary composers of our time, and features a number of special guests including internationally renowned soloists, conductors and ensembles.

In all, the festival will see five concerts being held in various different venues around Riga and beyond, all of which will be focusing on different sides of Pelēcis’s music. The first of these, and the only one to be held outside of Latvia, took place on the 16th of June at the Komitas Chamber Music House in Yerevan, Armenia, and featured the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia who took to the stage alongside renowned violinist Karen Shahgaldyan.

This will be followed by a concert on the 23rd of September at the Great Hall of Riga’s Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, which will see the JVLMA Symphony Orchestra performing under the baton of Latvian conductor Kaspars Ādamsons. Then, on the 4th of November, The State Choir "Latvija", led by Maris Sirmais, shall be presenting a number of Pelēcis’s works at the Riga Cathedral, before the Sinfonietta Riga and conductor Normunds Šnē arrive at the Great Hall of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music on the 21st of December for the festival’s penultimate concert where they will be joined by two celebrated soloists – oboist Pēteris Endzelis and pianist Agnese Egliņa.

Finally, this festival in honour of one of the leading composers of our age shall be brought to a close with a concert at the Small Guild Hall in Riga, featuring, among other musicians, the famed Latvian pianist Reinis Zariņš.

By interpreting many of Pelēcis’s most renowned works, these artists shall not only be celebrating the legacy of the Latvian composer, but will also be helping to bring his name and his works to new audiences, both within Latvia’s own borders and on the international stage.
